Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs ca. 1.6 m tall.

Stems: Stems unbranched, rounded to angular, pubescent with multicellular hairs or glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, widely spaced, borne on upper 3–4 nodes. Those leaves of a pair subequal, symmetrical except at base, broadly ovate, 20–22 cm long, 12–12.8 cm wide. Apex broadly acuminate. Base ± unequal, truncate. Surfaces glabrous, dark green on upper surface; lower surfaces pale green, fleshy and chartaceous(?). Margins coarsely crenate. Petioles 6–11.5 cm long, base sometimes clasping the stem or perfoliate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers several in cymes arising in the leaf axils(?), glabrous throughout, peduncles ca. 7 mm long, pedicels ca. 6–7 mm long, bracts ovate, distinct or occasionally connate, ca. 8 mm long, deciduous. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 2–5(6)-lobed, apparently zygomorphic, broadly fusiform in bud, tipped by a short beak, in anthesis pale green, ca. 8 mm long, probably deciduous after anthesis, tube ca. 6 mm long, glabrous, lobes all similar, ca. 2 mm long, all separating by anthesis. Corolla usually bilabiate, white, tube narrowly funnelform, slightly curved, ca. 11 mm long, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, the lobes imbricate in bud. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, the 2 upper Stamens fertile, others staminodial, +/– with abortive anthers; fertile anthers coherent positioned in throat of corolla tube, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits or occasionally by apical pores. Ovary superior, oblong–ovoid, 2-carpellate, 1-celled, placentation parietal, placentas 2, ± intruded, rarely joined in center and dividing ovary into 2 cells; ovules numerous, anatropous, glabrous, apex rounded; style not seen.
